Since 2011, Startup Weekend Las Vegas has been one of the most attended and anticipated events in the startup community.
This time around, Startup Weekend Las Vegas will take place Friday, November 18– 20, 2016. The event will be held at The Iron Yard Las Vegas campus.
Startup Weekend is a 54-hour event where developers, designers and business folks come together to pitch an idea and launch a business, all in one weekend. It is a great opportunity to test startup ideas, meet potential co-founders, build the community in Las Vegas, and launch your next startup.
gabriel-shepherd“Startup Weekend is one of my favorite events and always has been since I came to the first one that Shavonnah produce in 2011,” said co-organizer Gabriel Shepherd. “I have attended and competed in Startup Weekends multiple times since and always look forward to them happening.”
“Whats great about Startup Weekend is you have 54 hours to not only build your idea, but in many cases you are doing it with people you don’t know or who you have never worked with before,” he continued. “You learn entrepreneur lessons like organization, communication, and division of responsibilities. While it is a competition, the best part for me is the all the friends, lessons, and memories I have made by attending these events.”
Shepherd says Las Vegas Startup Weekend will follow a basic model that is used at other Startup Weekend events around the globe. Startup Weekend events help participants grow their networks, build something awesome, and get inspired.
“Anyone is welcome to pitch a startup idea and receive feedback from peers,” he said. “Teams organically form around top ideas, as determined by popular vote. Each team has 54 hours to create a business model, code, design, and determine market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations of top ideas to the crowd.”
“Las Vegas hasn’t had a Startup Weekend in a year,” said Shepherd. “We are really excited to bring it back and hope that people will be inspired to contribute and ensure it continues on a more frequent basis.”

Shepherd is organizing the event alongside by Dr. Janet Runge from UNLV. The weekend will be hosted by The Iron Yard, Las Vegas’ only code school. Participants will enjoy plenty of great food, a cool and supportive venue, special guest speakers, and plenty of energy from all the excited participants.

But if you aren’t interested in competing and want to help, we could definitely use help in a few areas,” said Shepherd. “We will need volunteers during the event to help run things registration, venue setup, and odds and ends throughout the weekend. Additionally, if your company would like to contribute through the form of a sponsorship, we have a few opportunities where your company can get involved and establish itself as a community partner. Just email us at [email protected].”
