VegasTechFund-backed Local Motors announced the LM3D Swim, part of the first 3D-printed car series.
Local Motors engineers and designers are working around the clock to develop a 3D-printed car that exceeds FMVSS standards by 2017. The LM3D Swim has not yet passed regulatory muster, but the company believes everything is in order for deliveries starting in 2017.
“This particular model will consist of nearly 75 percent 3D-printed material in the form of a single piece, but they eventually plan to increase it to 90 percent,” reports Tech Cocktail. “The body is a mix of 80 percent ABS plastic and 20 percent carbon fiber. Like many of the 3D designs in the series, the LM3D Swim concept came from Local Motors community, Open IO.”
