The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Anyone, anywhere can organize an Hour of Code event. One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages and no experience needed.
This year, Hour of Code events are taking place around the world December 7-13, 2015.  In fact, there are over 170,000 Hour of Code events happening all around the globe this year!
Hour of CodeIn Las Vegas, Hour of Code will be taking place at The Innevation Center on Wednesday, December 9, 2015.
Switch and The Innevation Center are committed to advancing education not just in the state of Nevada, but worldwide,” explained Chelsea Phillips, Director of Innevation. “We believe every student should have the opportunity to take part in creating technology that’s changing the world. By exposing young students to fundamental computing concepts on a level playing field, starting with the earliest learners, we can inspire today’s generation of students to build technology.  Learning the basics will not only help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills, but it will prepare students for success in any 21st-century career path.”
This year, The Innevation Center decided to partner with Katie Decker, Principal of Walter Bracken STEAM Academy and Walter Long Elementary School for the Hour of Code event.
“When Principal Decker initially began at Bracken, the elementary school was one of the lowest-performing schools in the district,” said Phillips. “She worked to improve the climate and academics of the school, spearheading the development of unique magnet programs. Principal Decker was recently chosen to do the same at Walter Long Elementary School. The Innevation Center is excited to be welcoming 150 fifth graders from both of these schools next Wednesday.”
Currently, the team at The Innevation Center is looking to get more volunteers for the event. Volunteers will work with small groups of students as they navigate through the hour-long tutorial. To sign up, please visit the team’s blog or email Chelsea Phillips at [email protected].
