12 Tips for Plugging Into the #VegasTech Startup Scene

We recently saw Joshua Baer’s guide to the Austin Startup Scene and were inspired to create something similar for those who are new to #VegasTech! Before you touch down in Las Vegas, here’s a checklist to get you started:

1. Sign up for the VegasTech.com weekly email newsletter. We share popular articles from the past week, post a list of upcoming events, and more!
2. Follow #VegasTech community members on Twitter. Search the #VegasTech hashtag to see who’s talking about community matters.
3. Join the Vegas Tech group on Facebook. This group has over 900 members and is a great way to start getting plugged in and meeting new friends!
4. You can read local news about the #VegasTech startup scene at a number of outlets online. We like to read Tech.co’s Las Vegas section, The Las Vegas Review Journal, The Las Vegas Sun, Las Vegas Weekly, and DTLV.com.
5. Check out blogs from community members and organizations. We like to read VegasStartups.com, The Mill’s blog, and The Innevation Center’s blog.
6. Hoping to bump into another community member? Here’s a list of places to stop by when you are visiting the #VegasTech startup scene!
7. If you love attending events like we do, the #VegasTech community has many to choose from each week. Start by taking a look at the VegasTech.com community event calendar – and be sure to add your own event, too! Other event calendars we like to check out are curated by The Innevation Center and Work In Progress.
8. The #VegasTech community has Meetups for every interest under the desert sun. Get to know the hacker community at SYN Shop, the Las Vegas Hackerspace. Or pick up a new coding language at one of the many programming Meetups at The Innevation Center. Search Meetup.com for Las Vegas and you’ll see many options!
9. Come visit us at a hack-a-thon, bootcamp, or Startup Weekend event. Check out upcoming multi-day events on the VegasTech.com community calendar. Get the latest on Startup Weekend Las Vegas at @SWVegas.
10. Drop into a co-working space to connect with the #VegasTech community while you work. There are new co-working spaces popping up often and here are some we enjoy: The Innevation Center, Work In Progress, and Co-Operate.
11. Stay awhile and learn a new skill or grow your startup! The Iron Yard Las Vegas is a great place to check out if you want to learn to code. The Mill’s Idea Accelerator and Startup Accelerator programs can help founders take their ideas or startups to the next level.
12. Meet other founders and business owners who call Las Vegas home. Follow our “Meet #VegasTech Startups” series on VegasTech.com to get to know those who are building great things in the Las Vegas community. You can also visit Downtown Project’s portfolio page to see a list of businesses funded by the Downtown Project.
